Hangos KM and Szederkényi G (2014), "A model structure-driven hierarchical decentralized stabilizing control structure for process networks", Journal of Process Control. Vol. 24(9), pp. 1358-1370.
Abstract: Based on the structure of process models a hierarchically structured state-space model has been proposed for process networks with controlled mass convection and constant physico-chemical properties. Using the theory of cascade-connected nonlinear systems and the properties of Metzler and Hurwitz matrices it is shown that process systems with controlled mass convection and without sources or with stabilizing linear source terms are globally asymptotically stable. The hierarchically structured model gives rise to a distributed controller structure that is in agreement with the traditional hierarchical process control system structure where local controllers are used for mass inventory control and coordinating controllers are used for optimizing the system dynamics. The proposed distributed controller is illustrated on a simple non-isotherm jacketed chemical reactor.

Abstract: In this paper, all possible sparse chemical reaction network structures of a classical three-dimensional Lorenz system are computed assuming a given chemical complex set. The original nonkinetic equations are transformed into kinetic form using two different approaches: firstly, using a state-dependent time-rescaling and secondly, by applying the theory of X-factorable systems. Using the notions of core reactions and core complexes, an effective optimization-based computation approach is proposed for the calculation of all structurally different sparse reaction graphs. The resulting structures are briefly analyzed and compared from a structural point of view.

Abstract: In this contribution the problem relating dynamic behavior and parameter values for weakly reversible chemical reaction networks (CRNs) that obey the mass action law is revisited. The approach is founded on previous methods and results discussed in [15-16] for weakly reversible CRNs. Two new research directions are however undertaken in this study, one of them exploits an alternative factorization of the Kernel of the Kirchhoff matrix which in a natural way links complex balance with zero deficiency. The other one intends to use the convex structure of the so-called family of solutions described in [15] on the space of reaction channels.

Abstract: In this article the identifiability analysis of a single Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) type voltage dependent ion channel model under voltage clamp circumstances is performed. According to the results of the identifiability analysis, the two steady-state parameters ($m_, $h_) and the conductance ($g$) are not globally identifiable. Moreover, no pair from these three parameters is identifiable. Based on the results of the identifiability analysis, a novel optimization-based identification method is proposed and demonstrated on in silico data. The proposed method is based on the decomposition of the parameter estimation problem into two parts. The results of the article are used to formulate explicit criteria for the design of voltage clamp protocols.

Abstract: In this paper it is shown that deficiency zero mass action reaction networks containing one terminal linkage class are parametrically and therefore structurally unique with a fixed complex set. Clearly, weakly reversible deficiency zero networks with one linkage class belong to this class. However, it is shown through an illustrative example that deficiency zero networks with several linkage classes can have multiple dynamically equivalent realizations, even if the individual linkage classes are weakly reversible.

Gáspár P, Szabó Z, Szederkényi G and Bokor J (2012), "Design of a two-level controller for an active suspension system", Asian Journal of Control. Vol. 14, pp. 664-678.
Abstract: The paper focuses on a control design for a vehicle suspension system in which a balance between different performance demands is achieved. The starting point of the control design is a full–car model which contains nonlinear components, i.e. the dynamics of the dampers and springs and nonlinear actuator dynamics. In order to handle the high complexity of the problem this paper proposes the design of a two-level controller of an active suspension system. The required control force is computed by applying a high-level controller, which is designed using a linear parameter varying (LPV) method. For the control design the model is augmented with weighting functions specified by the performance demands and the uncertainty assumptions. The actuator generating the necessary control force is modelled as a nonlinear system for which a low-level force-tracking controller is designed. To obtain the low-level controller a backstepping method is proposed. As an alternative solution a feedback linearization method is also presented. The operation of the controller is illustrated through simulation examples.

Johnston MD, Siegel D and Szederkényi G (2012), "A linear programming approach to weak reversibility and linear conjugacy of chemical reaction networks", Journal of Mathematical Chemistry. Vol. 50, pp. 274-288.
Abstract: A numerically effective procedure for determining weakly reversible chemical reaction networks that are linearly conjugate to a known reaction network is proposed in this paper. The method is based on translating the structural and algebraic characteristics of weak reversibility to logical statements and solving the obtained set of linear (in)equalities in the framework of mixed integer linear programming. The unknowns in the problem are the reaction rate coefficients and the parameters of the linear conjugacy transformation. The efficacy of the approach is shown through numerical examples.

Abstract: An algorithm is given in this paper for the computation of dynamically equivalent weakly reversible realizations with the maximal number of reactions, for chemical reaction networks (CRNs) with mass action kinetics. The original problem statement can be traced back at least 30 years ago. The algorithm uses standard linear and mixed integer linear programming, and it is based on elementary graph theory and important former results on the dense realizations of CRNs. The proposed method is also capable of determining if no dynamically equivalent weakly reversible structure exists for a given reaction network with a previously fixed complex set.

Abstract: The distinguishability and identifiability of biological network models are key properties influencing the reliability of structural and parametric identification of such models. Recently, several new results have been published about dynamically equivalent and linearly conjugate reaction networks. In this paper, the notion and importance of dynamical equivalence and linear conjugacy of biochemical network models obeying the mass action law is shown. For this, new concepts in the form of core complexes and core reactions for linearly conjugate networks are introduced. Two examples illustrate the developed computation methods.

Abstract: This paper presents the modeling and identification procedure for a VVER-type pressurized water reactor. The modeling goal is to produce a mathematical description in nonlinear state-space form that is suitable for control-oriented model analysis and preliminary controller design experiments. The proposed model takes temperature effects and Xenon poisoning into consideration and thus it is an extension of formerly published simpler model structures. Real transient measurement data from the plant has been used for the identification that is based on standard prediction error minimization. It is shown that the model is fairly well identifiable and the newly inserted model components significantly improve the quality of fit between the measured and computed model outputs. Furthermore, the estimated parameter values fall into physically meaningful ranges.

Abstract: This paper presents new results about the optimization based generation of chemical reaction networks (CRNs) of higher deficiency. Firstly, it is shown that the graph structure of the realization containing the maximal number of reactions is unique if the set of possible complexes is fixed. Secondly, a mixed integer programming based numerical procedure is given for computing a realization containing the minimal/maximal number of complexes. Moreover, the linear inequalities corresponding to full reversibility of the CRN realization are also described. The theoretical results are illustrated on meaningful examples.

Abstract: In this paper a simple one compartment Hodgkin–Huxley type electrophysiological model of GnRH neurons is presented, that is able to reasonably reproduce the most important qualitative features of the firing pattern, such as baseline potential, depolarization amplitudes, sub-baseline hyperpolarization phenomenon and average firing frequency in response to excitatory current. In addition, the same model provides an acceptable numerical fit of voltage clamp (VC) measurement results. The parameters of the model have been estimated using averaged VC traces, and characteristic values of measured current clamp traces originating from GnRH neurons in hypothalamic slices. The resulting parameter values show a good agreement with literature data in most of the cases. Applying parametric changes, which lead to the increase of baseline potential and enhance cell excitability, the model becomes capable of bursting. The effects of various parameters to burst length have been analyzed by simulation.

Abstract: In this paper, we analyze the identifiability properties of a Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) type voltage dependent ion channel model under voltage clamp circumstances. The elimination of the differential variables is performed, and the identifiability of various parameters is analyzed using the differential algebra approach and the algorithm based on the Taylor series expansion of the output. It is shown that the model is structurally non-identifiable using certain commonly applied parametrizations, and hidden dependences between physical parameters are unravelled. Using the results of the identifiability analysis, physically meaningful examples are shown when the model parameters are different but the system outputs are identical.

Abstract: The design and implementation of a scan matching based map building method is described in this paper. The brand new LMS-100 laser rangefinder was used and evaluated for point measurement and metric map building. The official driver of the rangefinder was migrated to Linux in order to be integrated into the applied software framework. The measurement results were compared to data obtained by the widely used LMS-200 device. Both sensors were mounted on a commercially available PowerBot differentially driven mobile robot. It is shown that for indoor robotic applications, the LMS-100 is similarly well-usable to the LMS-200 with significant advantages in compactness and power consumption. Furthermore, from a map-building point of view, the LMS-100 performs better in dense environments with obstacles having complex reflective surfaces.

Abstract: The paper presents the design of a pressure controlling tank located in the primary circuit of a Nuclear Power Plant. All steps from modeling through control design to implementation are detailed. Based on first engineering principles a second-order Wiener model is formulated and its unknown parameters are identified. The control design is based on a dynamic inversion method. The performance of the designed closed-loop system is tuned by an error feedback. The implemented controller is of a distributed structure including measurement and control PLCs, a continuous power controller and a special supervisor module. The nominal stability of the controller in the networked environment is analyzed by using the maximum allowable transmit interval. The hardware and software design and implementation obey the safety-critical requirements imposed by the special nature of the plant.

Abstract: The reaction kinetic realizations of nonnegative polynomial systems are studied in this paper. It is briefly reviewed that a wide class of positive systems can be written in or simply transformed to kinetic form. Based on the structure of kinetic realizations, valuable information can be obtained about the dynamical properties of the investigated systems using the results of chemical reaction network theory (CRNT). Since the realizations of a given system can have many different structures, mixed integer linear programming is used to generate the ones with required properties (i.e. the minimal/maximal number of reactions or complexes).

Fazekas C, Szederkényi G and Hangos K (2008), "Parameter estimation of a simple primary circuit model of a VVER plant", IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science. Vol. 55(5), pp. 2643-2653.
Abstract: A simple dynamic model in physical coordinates (an improved version of our model reported in teFazekasEtAl_NED:2007) and the corresponding parameter estimation procedure for the primary circuit dynamics of VVER-type pressurized water reactors is presented in this paper. The primary uses of the model are control oriented dynamic model analysis and high level controller design. The most important requirements of the simple physical model are that it should contain the possible minimal number of differential equations and it should be capable of describing important dynamic phenomena such as load change transients between day and night periods. Furthermore, the estimated parameter values should fall into physically meaningful ranges. The parameter estimation method is based on the decomposition of the overall system model into separably identifiable subsystems. The identification of the subsystems is followed by the fine-tuning of the model parameters with the parameter estimation of the entire system model. The constructed model satisfies the predefined requirements and its response shows good fit to the measurement data that were obtained from three units of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant in Hungary.

Abstract: In the present paper a globally stabilizing feedback controller design method is proposed for process systems when the feedback structure is also assumed to be in a quasi-polynomial form. It is shown that such feedback structure can always be achieved for process systems. By exploiting the special structure of the controller design problem, the existent iterative linear matrix inequality (ILMI) algorithm of [Y.-Y. Cao, J. Lam, Y.-X. Sun, Static output feedback stabilization: an ILMI approach, Automatica 12 (1998) 1641–1645] is applied to solve the BMI feasibility problem underlying the design. In addition, some partial results on placing the globally stable equilibrium point with respect to the positive orthant have also been proposed that is only possible in a fully actuated situation when the input variables are the intensive variables at the inlet. Furthermore, some preliminary results in selecting the structure of the QP-type feedback have also been presented.

Abstract: In the present work, we combine the concepts and tools from Irreversible Thermodynamics and Control Theory in a contribution to unravel the origin of complex nonlinear behaviour in biochemical networks. Regarding cells as thermodynamic systems, we can consider dynamic evolution of intracellular processes in terms of the combined action of an endogenous entropy production and the entropy flux associated to chemicals passing through the control volume. Based on a generalized description of biochemical systems, a physically motivated storage function is constructed and used for stability analysis. In this way, the entropy flux of open systems can be meaningfully modified by efficient nonlinear control schemes capable of network stabilization, and irreversible thermodynamics provide us with the physical insight to further interpret the controlled response.

Abstract: In this letter we show that closed reversible chemical reaction networks with independent elementary reactions admit a global pseudo-Hamiltonian structure which is at least locally dissipative around any equilibrium point. The structure matrix of the Hamiltonian description reflects the graph topology of the reaction network and it is a smooth function of the concentrations of the chemical species in the positive orthant. The physical interpretation of the description is briefly explained and two illustrative examples are presented for global and local dissipative Hamiltonian description, respectively.

Abstract: Input-output linearization-based adaptive reference tracking control of a low-power gas turbine model is presented in this paper. The gas turbine is described by a third-order nonlinear input-affine state-space model, where the manipulable input is the fuel mass flowrate and the controlled output is the rotational speed. The stability of the one-dimensional zero dynamics of the controlled plant is investigated via phase diagrams. The input-output linearizing feedback is extended with a load torque estimator algorithm resulting in an adaptive feedback scheme. The tuning of controller parameters is performed considering three main design goals: appropriate settling time, robustness against environmental disturbances and model parameter uncertainties, and avoiding the saturation of the actuator. Simulations show that the closed-loop system is robust with respect to the variations in uncertain model and environ-mental parameters and its performance satisfies the defined requirements.

Abstract: A simple low dimensional nonlinear dynamic model of the primary circuit in a VVER-type nuclear power plant is developed from first engineering principles that is able to capture the most important dynamics of the system in normal operating modes. The model includes the description of the main control loops in the system, too. The model has been verified and validated by using measured data from three VVER-440 units of Paks Nuclear Power Plant in Hungary, and a good fit has been obtained. This qualifies the model to be the basis for the integrated re-design of the primary control loops.

Abstract: In this paper an algorithm is proposed for the retrieval of a wide class of invariants in quasi-polynomial systems. The invariance properties of the algorithm under different transformations are discussed. The application of the algorithm is illustrated on physical and numerical examples. The algorithm has been implemented in the MATLAB computing environment.

Abstract: Robust model predictive control of an industrial pressurizer is presented in this paper. The physical model of the system is based on first engineering principles and the model parameters have been previously identified from measured data. To satisfy the hard constraints on the state variables and the input even in the presence of disturbances, the so-called single policy robust model predictive control method is applied. The maximal admissible level set, the disturbance invariant set and the terminal sets are determined for the system. Simulation results show that the proposed controller satisfies all the requirements and shows good time-domain behavior.

Hangos K, Szederkényi G and Tuza Z (2004), "The effect of model simplification assumptions on the differential index of lumped process models", Computers and Chemical Engineering. Vol. 28, pp. 129-137.
Abstract: The effect of model simplification assumptions on the differential index of differential-algebraic equation (DAE) process models is investigated in this paper. A process model is considered as the set of model equations in the form of a DAE system together with a suitable specification forming a zero degree of freedom model. Such a model is described by its equation variable graph. The effect of model simplification assumptions is analyzed by describing them as graph transformations acting on the structure graph of the process model. Efficient incremental graph–theoretic algorithms are proposed to follow the changes in the variable-equation assignments and for analyzing the changes in the differential index during the model simplification phase of the modelling process. The algorithms provide guidelines on how to modify the specification in order to obtain an index 1 model after model simplification. A case study with different transformations is used to demonstrate the operation of the algorithms and to follow the effect of constant and steady-state assumptions on the differential index of a simple process model.

Abstract: We show that the global stability of quasi-polynomial (QP) and Lotka–Volterra (LV) systems with the well-known logarithmic Lyapunov function is equivalent to the existence of a local generalized dissipative Hamiltonian description of the LV system with a diagonal quadratic form as a Hamiltonian function. The Hamiltonian function can be calculated and the quadratic dissipativity neighborhood of the origin can be estimated by solving linear matrix inequalities.

Abstract: The reachability of a simple nonlinear fed-batch fermentation process model is investigated in this paper. It is shown that the known difficulties of controlling such processes are primarily caused by the fact that the rank of the reachability distribution is always less than the number of state variables. Furthermore, a co-ordinates transformation is calculated analytically that shows the nonlinear combination of the state variables which is independent of the input. The results of the reachability analysis and that of the co-ordinates transformation are independent of the source function in the system model. The results are extended to the four state variable non-isotherm case, and to nonlinear fed-batch chemical reactors with general reaction kinetics.

Abstract: Different types of nonlinear controllers are designed and compared for a simple continuous bioreactor operating near optimal productivity. This operating point is located close to a fold bifurcation point. Nonlinear analysis of stability, controllability and zero dynamics is used to investigate open-loop system properties, to explore the possible control difficulties and to select the system output to be used in the control structure. A wide range of controllers are tested including pole placement and LQ controllers, feedback and input–output linearization controllers and a nonlinear controller based on direct passivation. The comparison is based on time-domain performance and on investigating the stability region, robustness and tuning possibilities of the controllers. Controllers using partial state feedback of the substrate concentration and not directly depending on the reaction rate are recommended for the simple fermenter. Passivity based controllers have been found to be globally stable, not very sensitive to the uncertainties in the reaction rate and controller parameter but they require full nonlinear state feedback.

Abstract: The effect of model simplification assumptions on the differential index of DAE process models is investigated in this paper. Efficient incremental graph-theoretical algorithms are proposed to follow the changes in the variable-equation assignments during the modelling process. Case studies are used to demonstrate the operation of the algorithms and the effect of steady-state assumptions on the differential index of a simple process model.

Abstract: The thermodynamic approach of analyzing structural stability of process plants was extended to construct the simple Hamiltonian model of lumped process systems. This type of model enables us to design a nonlinear PD feedback controller for passivation and loop shaping. This approach is applicable for lumped process systems where Kirchhoff convective transport takes place together with the transfer and sources of various types, and the manipulable input variables are the flow rates. Systems with constant mass holdup and uniform pressure in every balance volume satisfy these conditions. General results are shown by simple examples of practical importance: on a bilinear heat exchanger cell and on an isotherm CSTR with nonlinear reaction.

Weyer E, Szederkényi G and Hangos K (2000), "Grey Box Fault Detection of Heat Exchangers", Control Engineering Practice. Vol. 8, pp. 121-131.
Abstract: A grey-box model-based method for fault diagnosis is proposed in this paper. The method is based on a first principle model of the process unit, i.e. a heat exchanger, and on a grey-box model of the fault, i.e. the deterioration of the heat transfer surface by aging. During normal operating conditions the heat transfer coefficient is constant or slowly decreasing due to material settling on the heat transfer surface. In old heat exchangers big pieces of settled material can break off causing damage. When this happens, the heat transfer coefficients will rise sharply. In the proposed method a recursive least-squares estimator with forgetting factor is used to track the heat transfer coefficients. The settled material breakage fault is detected via detection of abrupt positive jump in the estimated heat transfer coefficients using a cumulative sum (CUSUM) test. The capability to detect faults in any industrial equipment is heavily dependent on the availability of suitable measurements. For heat exchangers the variables related to the in- and outflows of the equipment (flowrates and temperatures) are usually measured, but measurements along the equipment length are rarely available. Therefore, the possibilities of fault location in space are rather limited. However, simplified models can be used for fault detection in this case. Moreover, a fault detection method is proposed with the possibility of spatial fault location when measurements along the cold side are available. The proposed method is illustrated on simulated examples with different measurement situations.
